So you pull up to the Skippy Lube. The service men are leering at you, sizing up your wallet. You don’t like the feeling because you’ve heard these rip-off repair shops are every where.

And you can’t help but think, if I pay these thugs, are they really going to fix anything?

Maybe yes maybe no, but you don’t have to sit in the lobby and wonder. You have rights as a consumer, and this is what you ought to know about automotive repair.

The laws we’re going to reference only apply to the state of California but most other states have similar laws for your protection, check the links below for more information about your area.

It all starts with the automotive repair act of 1971, which entitles a customer to, a written estimate for repair work, a detailed invoice of work done and parts supplied, and the return for placement parts requested at the time the work order is placed.

So what does that mean?

If you take a car in to get a part replaced, ask for the part, fan, fuse, filter, belt, as long that it’s not hazardous they have to give it to you.

That way you know the work was done and the part was actually damaged and needed replacing.

You see this part? There are cracks all along the belt, they replaced a broken part which means they fixed it, because it’s broken.

As long as they put a belt back were this one came from.

Knowing your rights as a consumer means next time you take your car into a mechanic, he won’t just get taken to the cleaners.

Just because a company’s name ends in “lube” doesn’t necessarily make them a slick, rip-off repair shop, but you know the chances are good. No matter what their name is, be careful and know your rights.
