A New Kind Of Rebel

Vote With Your Feet January 18th, 2008

You really are a rebel. Just a new kind of rebel.

Uh Oh! No video. You will need the Flash player and Javascript enabled to watch this show.

This one’s for the kids.

It’s a fact of life, for most of us – as you grow up you need to assert your independence – you need to show that you’re in charge of your life. Normally this involves trying to distance yourself from authority figures like teachers and parents… and parents and teachers… and people who have authority.

It feels exciting, rebellious, and unexpected – but it’s not. In fact its totally predictable. Guess what your parents and teachers did it too. I bet that takes the wind out of your sails doesn’t it?

For years kids have been choosing music, activities, a style of speech. manners and dress that’s not the standard of the previous generations. Usually it’s considered “below the standard’. Some might call it a step down. And it’s been going on for a long time.

Why? Because in a lot of cases rebelling against parental authority just isn’t enough, you want to do something that really annoys ‘em.

But what happens when Mom’s thinking about another tongue piercing and Dad listens to music that sounds like grinding industrial noise with nothing but profanity for lyrics. I mean not even a conjunction just straight up profanity. You’re gonna have a hard time getting much lower than that.

Now you’re all depressed.

I hear you. You’re feeling confused. I mean, how do you rebel against parents who’s standards are so messed up that anything is okay with them. We’ll help you out.

Okay, here’s a few ideas. Start by changing the music you listen to. Try classical or 20s or maybe big band.

You could also change the way you dress. Maybe wear button-up shirts everywhere and dress pants… even when you play sports.

And if you really want to get a ‘nails on the chalkboard’ kind of reaction start using words like nifty and gipper. Make sure you remind them about your mission in life to become a stock broker or a police officer.

Then start telling the truth and getting good grades, by that time they’ll have no idea what to do with you.

You really are a rebel. Just a new kind of rebel.

Keep working at it. You’ll wear them down. Eventually they’ll be disgusted with you. Mission accomplished.

Brett makes a good point, if people just keep rebelling then eventually everyone becomes a messed up weirdo. What a lot of kids don't realize is that rebelling by trying to be "bad" doesn't solve anything. In fact it just makes it worse. Authority figures can usually be reasoned with.

I've found that cooperating with the "powers that be" while maintaining your own identity as a responsible adult has been far more beneficial than rebelling could ever be. Respecting authority is MAD IMPORTNAT if you ever want to be happy and/or peaceful because if you can't listen to authority, then ... more
