If a tree falls in the woods and no one is there to hear it does it really make a sound?

I heard space is a vacuum. If that’s true does it sound like my dirt devil?

well nagging physics, he was talking about sound waves and if he went bigger then what he was talking about then he would go off topic and people would become confused. I did notice that too during the video, but I am just telling you why he didn’t say that.

To my knowledge NASA has never bothered to test this out. They generally spend a lot of time trying to figure out how to counteract long term side affects from micro-gravity environments — like bone and muscle loss. The crew members on the ISS (International Space Station) have just about every minute of every day planned for them, which is a lot of planning because they have a sunrise every 90 minutes. So they don’t have a lot of free time to blow stuff up. Not that they could find much to blow up on the ISS. Everything we send up has to go through a strainer to make sure it’s safe. They once hit a golf ball out into space. Another guy threw a boomerang. That’s about the extent of the fun though.

Onen i-Estel Edain. U-chebin estel anim. I give hope to the Numenoreans. I keep no hope for myself. This theme keeps reverberating out in space and has now entered a super cluster known as Galaxy Elderon 5, passing through at about 500,000 miles an hour. Or more.
Is there a medium in G-Elderon-5? I don’t know. Perhaps the “happy medium” from “A Wrinkle in Time.” I’ll wave to him/her and see if she/he waves back. If so, then we may all be able to hear each other somewhere in the vicinity of G-E-5. If not, I’ll wait till “Prince Caspian” opens at the theater and ask him. Thank you.

So do either of you guys actually play the base?

One nitty picky part. You made a blanket statement about waves: that waves need a medium to move through. This is not true for all waves. Electromagnetic waves (you know… light waves, microwaves, etc.) do not require a medium.
Thats all.

Woow. We’re just learning about that in Physics. Neato!

It is also possible for sound to be in space if a ship blows up, the atmosphere inside the ship would act as the medium for the sound. Of-course that might be the last thing you hear as to be inside the bubble of atmosphere you would probably be to close to the explosion to survive.
The same thing goes for fire as well, if there is a breach in the hull the oxygen inside the ship would feed the fire and it would burn.
Love the show

Thank you so much! I had been wondering about that for quite some time.
Very interesting topic.

So that’s what the guitar in the studio was for. I was a bit confused. :)
And I still am…space confuses me. But I kind of got it! :)

This is actually a pretty nice topic to hear about. I admit that for Hollywood, they need to put sounds in to make it interesting, but it’s good to understand how things would really work.
