Bike To Work Day

Catching It May 15th, 2008 Spotting

It's not today it's tomorrow. But if we told you then it would be too late. So everybody suit up!

Uh Oh! No video. You will need the Flash player and Javascript enabled to watch this show.

It’s not today, it’s tomorrow, but if we told you then, it would be too late. So everybody suit up!

I need some of those leg clippy things…

This week was Bike to Work Week, and tomorrow is Bike to Work Day, which means it also happens to be Sit in a Giant Pool of Your Own Sweat All Day at Work Day.
That’s probably why they do it on Casual Friday.

I am totally pro biking-to-work, but my place is like 21 miles from this place.

I thought it was in April, not May. I mean, they’re similar. I mean, they have one letter in common…

Official Bike to Work Day is the 16th of Maypril, everybody knows that!

So yeah, I did my 42 mile round trip earlier. Last month. Late to work, late getting home, and giant pile of sweaty self all day, but it was worth it.

My brother bikes in to work everyday, but he lives like a mile and a half away from here, so… yeah, big sacrifice there. But seriously, good for you, Camera Guy!

So tomorrow, I think it’ll be Bike/Mass Transit to Work Day. That way I only have to ride about 16 miles with crazy insane drivers whizzing past me.
Ooh! Where’s my helmet?

Bike to Work Day makes me think of the people we see riding bikes outside our office everyday. See, we have this great view of the bike path right out the window. Check it out:

Now here comes the what you ought to know part: if you’re out for a casual bike ride, spandex is not necessary. And if you’re really out of shape? Spandex is not necessary.  And if you’re not a professional or really avid competitive cyclist? Spandex is totally not necessary… and probably not Casual Friday appropriate.

Real, serious cyclists do it to reduce the wind drag of their clothing flapping in the breeze. And if you’re just trying to get in shape riding your bike? Drag is your friend! So… wear a cape.

And if you’re gonna wear a cape on your bike, you might as well wear a giant flesh-toned unitard, and be Naked Biker Man. [Chuckle]

And then there was this guy we saw riding today, who was all oiled up and wearing a speedo… and a helmet!

And thinking on the unnecessary-ness of spandex, and because he was wearing a swimsuit to cycle, in, and because swimmers oil up to reduce drag, I looked at my brother and said,
“You know, I don’t think that oil’s gonna help him go any faster…”

To which he said:
“Yeah… I think he was trying to get a tan.”

Either way, it was totally disgusting.

So this Bike to Work Day, be considerate to mother earth and ride your bike … and while you’re at it, be considerate to the rest of us and leave the spandex and swimwear at home. And the oil! It’s just wrong.
