In case you guys want to stay up to date on whether the LHC has destroyed the world yet, this website will let you know. http://hasthelargehadroncolliderdestroyedtheworldyet.com/

I also thought it was funny how certain groups of fundamentalists thought that we might discover the "God" particle and of course that means sudden death. The discovery of God's power source means death for mankind, duhhhhh!

Am I being sucked into a black hole? Debatable, but that would mean that you are, too, so I won't go there... Thanks for doing a show on it! I shall now equal D.

Crap! You mean the earth didn't blow up.. and I skipped work and took out a loan to make a bet. That's what I get for taking odds on a 50 million-to-one shot.

I am totally amused that you have more disagreement over THIS video than the one on the Iraq "police action". I love this. Awesome job, as always.

Hurrah! So happy I found you guys. I just started watching yesterday and love it already! It's a video podcast on Zune, in case you didn't know that. That's how I found it. Got to love Scientist and what they do for the greater good! :)

Thank you for using my suggestion! I think the ego line is halirious! Great video and it was something I really wanted to know.

Ya Brett, your ego is really that big. =P. Funny video! and I doubt the atom smasher will make the Earth explode. It just doesn't seem likely and people just need to stop being so paranoid.

@pedro 1-they were quoting a viewer. 2-the odds are much lower. i believe they were saying just that. 3-if the results might lead to string theory, then doesn't that make it a part of it? 4-where is this nice page? 5-the higgins particle is only one part of it, not the whole objective. 6-the existence of dark matter is far from proven. you are seeing evidence of a force acting upon something else and theorizing that dark matter is the cause. 7-schrodingers cat is a paradox about something we dont fully understand. it in no way adds to the body of scientific knowledge. @stephers where is the gross ... more (179 words)

I've been living in a black hole for years ... not so bad. Hey I don't know if anyone else has said this, but idea for T-shirt, Atom Smasher - Get ready to suck.

"Electric volts"??? I think you mean "electron volts." It's one of the operating parameters, not a measure of power draw. (You should have known that was wrong! A volt is not a unit of power!)

Personally I think the whole dark theory is kind of erroneous. The idea that there's some kind of super dense material floating around in space that we just can't see has so many flaws. I refer you to the flogan theory of the 17th century. Recently I've heard a theory that's much more plausible to my understanding. That is that the universe is actually full of radioactive helium. All that intergalactic space if full of it (well as full as space can be and still be a relative vacuum). It makes sense if you ... more (145 words)

I was reading in some science journal (lord smack me now because I cannot remember what journal) that there are two major theoretical physicist that think the LHC might produce time altering particles, which in turn might travel back in time and stop the LHC from ever working. I am not that well versed in theoretical physics, but maybe another wyotk fan, who is versed in theoretical physics, could confirm or deny this claim.

I've read that the scientists who worked on the first atomic bomb, theorized that there was a chance that the bomb could ignite all the oxygen in the atmosphere.... They pushed the button anyway.

um theyre trying to dumb it down for those of us that dont get it,not try to keep it smart for those of you that already know all there is to know about black holes and string theory and such. thanks for the advanced lesson tho ha ha, i totally read all of it. yeah.

i love your videos, and i love this site. BUT, as a physicist, i have to say that this video quite poorly represents the issues and concerns surrounding the start-up of the LHC, and does a horrendous job at conveying the importance of the LHC to the scientific community, especially concerning the significance of the studies that it makes possible. considering the quality of your other posts, i expected more from the brothers winn... in the future, please refrain from publishing a video that is such a gross misrepresentation of physics and science in general. oh, and by the way, isn't yahtzee ... more (107 words)

Hey long time viewer, first time writing. 1. Switzerland and France, not Sweden. 2. The odds are much lower than that. 3. String theory isn't a part of it, the results might lead to it but it's not the objective of it. 4. There's a nice page that you should have read before making the article. 5. They're looking for the Higgins particle. 6. As far as dark matter and dark energy go, their existence is 'seen' by removing what we do see. 7. Schrodinger's cat? Keep it up.

Whew! I'm glad I don't play Yahtzee anymore. I don't want to accidentally start the machine that ends the universe.
  • 9/10/08 @ 20:39

    Danielle G

So the fate of the universe is Yahtzee? And the answer to the universe is 42...so...if someone gets a score of 42 in Yahtzee, the world will end?
