Today’s show is going to be awesome! Cause it’s for a three year old and three year olds are awesome. The idea for the show comes from the youngest and arguably cutest member of our secret society. Little Jesse joined [22] when she sent us a picture of a bioluminescent anglerfish. Which I have here.
Jesse I don’t know how you look happy and cranky at the same time but it’s cute.
Bioluminescence is chemically created light inside an organism. Its not phosphorescence. So with out getting too nerdy, here is the difference. A glow stick that you snap and shake and mix chemicals together that glow for a limited amount of time, that’s like bioluminescence. Glow in the dark jammies that have to absorb light to they can radiate it out later, that’s phosphorescent.
Most bioluminescent critters are found way deep down in the ocean because it’s dark down there. and they don’t have electrical outlets for night lights so they have to glow on their own. But they can be found other places as well.
Fireflies are bioluminescent and so are glow worms and certain mushrooms, and certain kinds of bacteria. Strangely enough, bioluminescence doesn’t occur in fresh water fish. Even in the deepest lakes on the planet. Because fresh water fish aren’t scared of the dark.
Every now and then off the coast of San Diego we get a red tide. And it’s super cool because at night when the waves crash billions of little microorganisms called dinoflagellates start to glow. So when the waves crash they glow in the dark. And when you stomp in the sand your footprint glows in the dark.
Most visible bioluminescence light is blue in color. And that would make sense seeing how blue transmits farthest underwater. Red light is absorbed more quickly which brings us to the coolest bioluminescent fish out there. The Black Dragon Fish. Even the name is cool. It’s really complicated how it works but the Black Dragon Fish shines out an infrared bioluminescent light that only it can see. And while it doesn’t shine very far it helps it to see prey and avoid attracting predators at the same time. Hold on I need a prop. It’s like it’s got it’s own special under water night vision gear thanks to bioluminescence.
[submarine sound] There’s a fish over there. I’m gonna eat it. Moving in for the kill. I don’t want to say kill, she’s a little girl. It’s traumatic, thinking about fish eating other fish.
So here is what you ought to know Jesse. I’ve read that the human body radiates infrared which is on the electromagnetic spectrum. And that means even though you can’t see it. You are bioluminescent too. Well… sort of.
Bioluminescence is great but Jesse you’re still a little fish. Don’t go towards the light.
