Day 8 – Propeller Whirlies

Day 7 - Wreaths And Fake Mistletoe December 18th, 2008 Day 9 - Etched Glass

First you buy them those annoying electronic noise-making toys when they're a baby.

Uh Oh! No video. You will need the Flash player and Javascript enabled to watch this show.

First you buy them those annoying electronic noisemaking toys when they’re a baby-yeah, that was a mistake-so you take the batteries out. But it’s too late. You’ve already started down a dark road.

From now on, the toys you buy for them will become inexorably more and more annoying and expensive as time goes on. Then you wake up one day and realize your kid plays video games and talks on their cell phone all day long. And what’s the solution? More technology. Now you’ve got to buy them a Wii fit just so they can actually exercise, cause you can’t exercise without a video game going. What, your three year old wants an iPhone this year? That is ridiculous. No toddler needs an iPhone. So you’ll just go get them an iPod touch.

You see, this whole problem could’ve been avoided early on with just a few low-tech, anti-couch-potato toys. One of my favorites are those little twirly things. They have a lot of names like prop-ups and twirlies and hand-copters. It’s a little stick with a propeller and you move your hands and it goes up-yeah, hold on a second.

We couldn’t find any at the local toy store so we just made our own. I got a propeller from a model airplane and screwed this dowel into it. And believe me, this baby is indestructable. I spent all afternoon playing with one of these when I was younger. Like three years ago. But they’re good for kids too. And when you spin them, not only do they go up, but they can go at. Hey, when you get caught without a clothespin gun, you have to improvise. And toys that fly are cool for all ages. I was testing this one outside and a crowd of fourty year old guys was next door yelling “DO IT AGAIN, DO IT AGAIN!” I was like a rockstar.

We’ll put a link to some cheap plastic ones down below, you can get ‘em for about a buck a piece. Or you could make your own. It’s the ultimate stocking stuffer. Just slip it right in there, next to the iPod touch.
