I came an listened to this commentary after it’s 6 weeks old and my-o-my what has changed in 6 weeks. Such good wisdom for such a young guy is unusual in today’s society. Do you have a crystal ball or what? No, I bet it’s that time travel thing you figured out and used it to make this article this week and sent it back in time to Feb 3rd. No matter what, I wish congress would get a clue and stop spending my future down the toilet.

Ron Paul is against the bailout, and he subscribes to a kind of economics which you didn’t include in your two economic theories: Austrian economics (or Mises economics).

Keynes was the guy that said “The government should pay people to dig holes in the ground and then fill them up.”

If you break a barber’s window, you could consider all the jobs created (the guy that has to clean it up, the windowmaker…). Those jobs are the seen created jobs, but what you don’t see are the jobs that would have been created had the barber been able to keep the money (money for the scissor maker, who’ll spend that much more money on a car, etc…) Really, all that was done by “creating jobs” was taking a window worth of money out of the economy.

Anyway, my big question is WHY this is still happening, why we’ve gone so far with all these bailouts and yet the average person doesn’t seem to think they will actually help. I don’t know many people who are excited about the bailout, but they are still pushing foreword with the most expensive one yet. It just seems so strange to me!

I wrote my reps- Senators & House, and got similar responses. I basically told them you can’t put out a fire with a blow torch, and that’s all this “stimulus” is. I also expressed dismay at the appointments they’ve voted to confirm (I checked their voting record beforehand to find out how they voted) and was told, basically- I know better than you, and we needed somebody in there ASAP. Disgusting. I don’t need to be elected to recognize that when somebody’s lying and stealing, they shouldn’t be trusted.

Love, love, love this episode! Best one ever, by far. I’m glad you’re challenging people to think about this 800 Billion dollar monstrosity. I mean, how can you even comprehend how much money that is? And, how much of it is really going to “stimulate” the economy? I agree we all need to think through this rather than pass it in a panic.

The sad thing is, I wrote my senator in opposition to the bailout. The response I got was basically about how I am wrong, and “this is the worst economic crisis since the great depression and we have to act now.” How is that listening to your constituents? Aren’t they there to serve us, not the other way around?

Also glad you put one to the auto industry…I’ve been saying for a long time, rather than asking for a bailout they should build better cars.

Great show! One thing that really makes my blood boil is the public school system is and will be suffering more in this new bailout plan of the gover. What happened to the NO CHILD Left Behind Act! The children who are going through the public school system will not recieve as much help as before (what little they did get). When the students are old enough to get an job, probably one to help the economy and ecology of the U.S. they will be lacking skills that should have been learned in school.

I have to note, Glenn Beck today suggested he’s for a limit to executive compensation is they accept bailout money on the condition that none of the employees including executives be paid more than the average annual income in America, $40-50k. I totally agree. I think that’s an awesome idea. If we’re lending you money, you shouldn’t be allowed to make more than the average citizen until you’ve paid us back from what your company makes more than that. Can’t make that work? So sorry, don’t ask for a bailout.

Nice catch phrase. I wish there was a way for me to easily post this to Facebook and make everyone watch it. Also, check out Obama’s economic stimulus plan. Even economists are begging him not to go through with it. Sure, it may look like spending money and creating jobs through public works programs might have worked to get out of the Great Depression, but modern economists now see that all it did was prolong it. Please don’t repeat history! That’s why you’re supposed to study it!

I don’t get it, those of us who work hard, DON’T sponge off the welfare system and pay to raise our own children are going to be punished and get nothing…but if I was a deadbeat with lots of kids and no job, I’d be getting all kinds of stuff…at YOUR expense!! My favorite phrase to come out of this whole bailout monstrosity is “Spending our way out of Bankruptcy”.

They are going to try and cap executive compensation at $500,000 if the company takes bailout money. 1) They shouldn’t be giving bailout money anyway. 2) The government has no business telling companies how much they can or cannot pay people. It is an issue that is easy to demagogue, but wage and price controls are NEVER the way to go (see price ceilings and floors, Econ 101).

And any company that makes the argument “We are too big to fail” should be summarily broken up into smaller companies that aren’t too big to fail. If they think they are too big to fail chances are they are also too big to really succeed.

Bless you. I used to not care about anything politics. But then I realized when I’m not paying attention, our “leaders” are slowly enslaving us with debt, laws they put in place to “protect me from myself”….or else… and then not thinking through the rippling results of the legislation they enact.
Personally, I’m a little partial to my freedom, and being allowed to choose and learn for myself. And often, the most growth comes from the hardest struggles. Let me grow.

WOW. Long show. Hit the nail on the head with that one. The bailout will be great, as long as they stop when they get to tanning salons and cigarette stores. Oh, who am I kidding? They won’t stop until the printing press breaks, and even then they’ll pay someone $10,000 per hour to fix it. Government never knows when to say when. The thing that pisses me off with the auto industry is that the people getting shafted aren’t the ones in charge of making crappy cars that no one wants.

I don’t want to bail them out, but at the same time it sucks to leave so many screwed over.

Maybe they should give the money to the popular brands (kia, toyota, honda etc.) to build new plants to employ the old big 3 workers.

Looking at new American cars, it’s not surprising that they aren’t doing well. My dads cars stereo is a big piece of crap. Shuts off all the time, pre-sets reset all the time. And it’s been replaced twice. And my moms cars brakes have squealed since she got it. Those have been replaced too.

People don’t want American cars… so why throw money at them? Why not bail out Beta-Max and HD-DVD? I could’ve sworn that America was capitalist. Not 100% sure though.
