Hello all! First post here on the comments, I felt that I should bring in my own reflections on the subject of multiverses and dimensions.

Before I do that, I want to compliment the Winn brothers for this wonderful podcast. I love the quirky humor that intersects the researched information, and the format stays clean and easy to follow. Great job!

So here goes:

The first thing I would like to bring is the fact that maybe we shouldn't see the "dot" we start with as only a way to make a line; shouldn't it be a dimension all by itself? You might say that a dot can't give you any information about width, depht and height like the "first 3 dimensions", but hey - neither can the other 7, conceptually at least. I see a dot in our universe a bit like a pixel in a screen (a 3d screen, yay!): The dot can change, have modifications applied to it, forces act on it. A dot in space is never completely stable: protons pass through it (light), matter sometimes also (asteroids, suns, planets), and it has variable gravitational forces that determine how it will react. A dot is, in fact, much more than a dot.

And that brings me to the second point: What if there are dimensions "Down" instead of up? What if there are dimensions from -1 to -10? Just because we cannot see them, comprehend them or even conceptualize them doesn't mean that they don't exist. Just as our "10 dimensions" finish as a point, maybe dimension -7 sees itself as our equivalent of 3D, and struggles to understand our dot as a 10th dimension!

What do you think?

Salutations, WYOTK fans, and other people surfing the web, who will, soon be a WYOTK fans,( WYOTK fans and soon to be WYOTK fans). I am writing this post in order to comment on the message of azurensis. Now, your message contains a lot...lol. The basis of your Message is reliant on the rules of classical physics and relativity. Now, perhaps your not aware but since the establishment of classical mechanics, some 300yrs ago, we have developed alternitive theories to explain the universe and its inner workings, like relativity. Now sine relativty, First proposed in 1905 by you know who, Einstein, which is more than a centruy ago, a lot of research and experiments have been done, i stress a lot. You see a lot can happen in 100 years. For one the legitimazation of quantum mechanics leading to its acceptance. You need to understand that with the mysteries of the quantum world things that seem impossible in the macroscopic world are reconsidered. You see, quamtum theory and newtonain physics contridict each other, newton viewed this world as billard balls if you will, very hard and round, which clearly couldnt disappear and reappear somewhere else which is a part of your message;"no path to a universe where one second you are standing here on earth, and the next second you are standing on Mars". Now Erwin schrodinger, who i am basing a few of my claims from, was responsible for what is known as schordingers wave which is a wave of probibility which, implys that a particle can be in two or more places at a time, and suddenly disappear and reappear. it is indeed possible for an atom to dissappear and reappear from one side of a brick wall to another, but the time to wait is extensive, past the lifetime of the universe, but nevertheless possible according to quantum theory. today we rely on the easy world of newtonaian mechanics, or classical mechanics as it is also reffered to as. newtonain physics has its flaws and was elaborated on and improved in relativity which also didnt describe everything, and is/was contridicted by quantum mechanics. the multi-verse theory does not necessarily only apply to the macrscopic world, my friend, but rather to both i say the macrocopic and the sub-sub- microscopic world, now as a reuslt of the fact that schrodingers wave implys these radical possibilities then maybe it is possible for the guy in front of the camera to be President of the galaxy, maybe not this one in this universe but maybe in another universe that is governed by different laws of chemistry and possibly differences in physical mechanics, if this is indeed so, then there is room for any possiblity, a unicorn may, suddenly appear and you can ride it to work, but dont count on but do not, i repeat do not discredit the notion. As a result of this i am writing this mesage in order to disagree with my comtemporary disagreeing with the host, agreeing with the author of that quite amazingbook, havnt read it yet but have seen reviews from online, and well saw the movie...lol. Well if you disaggre post something and i will talk to you then. ( ahh yes and there maybe serious gramatical errors in this message...becuase well im typing kinda late, and dont feel like revsing becuase im too lazy, and well dont have the patience, remember kids "patience is a virtue")I can be contacted at pedrotheeman@gmail.com, Pedrotheeman@aim.com, or pedrotheeeman@gmail.com

I disagree with your basic assumption that the multiverse implies that anything that could happen must happen somewhere. If our universe, the one with our set of physical laws as we understand them is a multiverse, with each moment branching off into many (but not necessarily infinite) different scenarios, each moment is contingent on the moment before it, and no particle can communicate information about its state faster than the speed of light. What this means is that there is no path to a universe where one second you are standing here on earth, and the next second you are standing on Mars. While there may be a universe where you didn't stop for coffee this morning, there is no universe where a unicorn popped into existence and you rode it into work. Since your macroscopic state is still almost entirely governed by classical mechanics, there probably isn't even a possible state where you are president of the US, as there may be no combination of quantum effects that could get you to that point. So, really, no paradox.

This episode was great. Very inventive and full of paradoxes or is that paradie? Who knows, just like the idea of time travel. I think Rob's explanation of the 10th dimension was lacking because he didn't mention the Flux Compasitor.

I have to agree with PKW in that the 7th dimension really doesn't represent infinity, as infinity has no beginning and end. This still begs the question of what was before the big bang? I know that's a somewhat unrelated issue (and charged with tons of religious connotations), but if you really are imagining all possibilities you have to think about ones with no beginning and end. And, that's where I get lost and confuse myself.

I will admit that it took me a while to get the dimensions and how you travel from one to the other, but I think I get it now. I sound even more like a dork now when I talk about anything being possible because it's possible in the 10th dimension. People have no idea what I am talking about so I am forced to explain. well paradoxes, fun times. I dont think the other dimension me would like me either.

So does that mean in the 10th dimension that I or anyone of us could be the Ugimachoo? That we could be the ones destroying ourselves? Hmmm... So thats probably one of the reasons that most geniuses went crazy and nuts.

Heh, this went from physics all the way through philisophy into plumbing. Wouldn't have it any other way.
And thanks for the link to the tenth dimension video. I was wondering for a long time about how all this dimension stuff was supposed to work but I didn't get it at all. Now at least I understand what it's all about.

Hi Brothers Winn, thanks for mentioning my animation, I really enjoyed your fun discussion of these ideas. Over at the Imagining the Tenth Dimension blog, I've posted a link to your entry in my Interesting Links section.

I also have over 200 movies posted on YouTube, there's other ones that expand on the ideas from this 11-minute animation you're talking about, which is basically just the ideas from chapter one of my book. These include discussions about what is and isn't possible within the multiverse, and other ways of thinking about dimensions. Here's some youtube links you might enjoy:

Here's the one that always got me... what if dimensions do not even exist. What if they were just mental constructs developed by our conceptual faculity to explain specific relationships between things. Then again, maybe I'm just slower than everyone else.

Great show, keep it up!

Aha! Yes! This is the old argument I used to have with my siblings. We called the two theories the "Bill and Ted" theory of time travel (where you couldn't really change anything that happens in the past) and the "Back to the Future" theory (where you can). I always preferred the "B'n'T" myself. Makes much more sense to me.

The thing is the only way we accept dimensions above the 3rd is that it negates our senses...

We can see dimensions 1 through 3. But we cannot see the 4th dimension. Yeah we understand time. But we can't see it.

You might argue that we can see time through the use of pictures and video cameras which may be true except we're viewing it through a TV which can only display something in the 2nd Dimension (length and width). We infer the 3rd dimension. And even when we see the 4th dimension we can't change what happened in the 4D and have it effect our 4D (I mean we can't change the past in the TV and expect our timeline to be any different).

This also assumes that we could "fold" the 5th dimension to see the 4th dimension. We first have to be able to be able to have the power to do so... which we don't.

So that already eliminates the 5th dimension because we don't even have the power to see it.

Thus making Dimensions 5 though 10.... "point"less..... get it? (nevermind)

Here's my naming of the dimensions:

1. length
2. width
3. depth
4. time
5. choice (within time)
6. results of choice (within different points of time)
7. the state of choices made within #4 which influences #5
8. the state of 6 which influences 7
(see? I can't even give names of these anymore)
9. the state of 4, which branches 7 and 8
10. Anything and Everything.

EVEN If we did make a time machine, my theory is it would function like a video camera in a hologram room. We could see the past from every angle possible but we couldn't interact with it.

I had a paradox with my plumbing the other day... no it didn't flow backwards... the water was just at an alternate point in the pipes then it should have been.... Maybe there is a third, sixth, or ninth dimension to plumbing.

Anyways, don't fret about the president of the galaxy other Winn... remember the great Douglas Adams taught us that the president has no power, he is just a figure head, and that there exists a being with the ultimate power in the universe (or multiverse) but doesn't know it.

I envision time as a stream. Flowing from point A to B if you go back and change how the stream flows you change only what flows comes after you. When you return your flow is still the same. However the flow that comes behind you is changed. You never know the change but the matter in the stream flows in a different way because of your actions.

OK- he lost me at the 7th dimension when he put the "big bang" cap on one end, and a big splat on the other, then called it infinity. Once he named the end points, it was no longer infinity, because it had a defined beginning and end, and by definition, infinity has neither. We don't think he understands infinity.
Husband would like me to mention Red Dwarf and the paradox of the second gunman on the grassy knoll completing the assassination of JFK really being himself from an alternate reality in which he didn't die and he became a disgrace to the presidency because of his extra-marital relationships. And so, to preserve his good name, he chose to end his own life at that previous point by being the second, and consequently unfindable gunman because by killing himself he therefore erased his future self causing the disgrace to no longer exist...woo conspiracy...just a thought. And if that wasn't clear, you're probably not a Red Dwarf fan.

Wow... I was actually just reading a free online novel that covers a lot of these issues, called "Light of Ar" (yeah, that's where I got my screen name, I admit it). The author is re-writing it from its original version, and the first 19 chapters are currently up to read at www.LightOfAr.com. Chapter 19 talks a little about some of these theories, though... The whole book's a definite must-read!

And yes, this was a seriously cool episode!

Traveling back in time was pretty easy. I just pressed that black dot that was moving left to right under your video and slid it more to the left. You wound up doing and saying the same things, so I guess going back in time didn't change anything.

due to poor understanding of time i suggest you read up on: http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=the-cosmic-origins-of-times-arrow on the current understanding of time and because you seem to mix dimensions with universes you might want to listen to:
