Aww man!!! So no more new ROFL/WTF (WTF in a funny way) shows coming up on the internet; and you guys are stuck to only four new shows only on DVD?! This bites; not only that this is my first post here (I just registered today), I can’t buy the DVD cause I’m broke and my parents won’t let me get anything online! Anyways, bellyaching aside, you guys do an awesome job with the shows and it would be a shame if your show were to die. And if you guys had no choice but to use a camcorder, crapy lighting, default video editing software, ditching the site, posting the videos only on Youtube, and more or less doing the show with little or no money, then I say do it! Cause we can’t get enough of your shows!

Thank you AngInAmerica…I think the other people who knocked my idea didn’t understand what I was saying, you apparently did!! And you took it even one step further, I love the Holidays idea…they could do a “politically incorrect” disk with all the current event shows (gay marriage, the bailout…) and a “weird science” volume…you’ve got a great idea. I’m sure someone on here will knock it but I say we let the Brother’s Winn decide if they like it =)

I can justify buyins 3 or 4 DVDs when they are all different, as opposed to buying 3 or 4 copies of the same thing…that’s what I was getting at with the volume idea =)

If they did it in volumes they would have to sell 150 of each volume to cover the production costs of each independent volume, so we would just be right back where we are now.

Here’s just a thought…since it looks like it might take a while to get those 650 DVDs ordered to keep the show afloat for a few months, what if you sold 2 or 3 DVDs (like WYOTK volume 1, 2, 3, etc…) and then we can all buy the volumes. You would probably end up selling almost the 600 DVDs (150 DVDs for each volume, three volumes is 450!!) So my suggestion, make a few DVDs and let us purchase them rather than trying to get all those random people to buy just the one.

That’s my 2 cents!!

And the fact that not only have they built a strong following [although not as big as they would like] and that the community they created still interacts and is willing to argue with eachother.

Another thought…
If there were endless advertisements on this page for other companies products. Wouldn’t that hurt the brothers credability? If they’re talking about WYOTK about a product, and you see ads plastered all over the page for that product, can you really believe them anymore? Or can you believe them as much as you would have? So, if they give a product a good review, it’s because they’ve personally used it, and like it, and think everyone else should know about it. If they were getting paid, that would corrupt that, to a certain degree. Don’tcha think?

I have two hobbies I get paid for. I’m a computer geek, and I work in an IT department. Granted, the work I do in IT, isn’t as much fun as working on my servers at home… but I do get paid for it.

I am also in a band. We play out, and when we do, we get paid. But to be honest, I would still play out, even if we weren’t getting paid, because I have so much fun doing it. I couldn’t just up and quit my job though, to play out full time.. because I’ve got mouths to feed.

You’re right AngInAmerica, I know because I do fix cars for a hobby, and since it is a hobby_ I rarely charge any labor. This means my friends and family get their cars repaired super-cheap, However I would eventually like to quit my job and fix cars full time, but if I do that I will be forced to charge people labor to support myself since that would become my job, I just have to hope that the people who I help out like my services enough to understand that I could’t do it nearly as cheaply anymore, but would choose to pay me the additional labor fees because they apreciate what I do for them and support me. I think I do see your point, but – to answer your question about taking a hobby a step further – I think it depends on the hobby, and on the step. You seem to put WYOTK on par with two brothers building model airplanes – if they really wanted to start doing that for a living, I guess it would make sense to look for sponsors and use their planes for advertising. I would consider them more like two brothers with a great knack for fixing cars – so much so, that they constantly have friends, family, and others asking for help. At some point, they either have to say, “No, I can’t, because I have to make a living,” or “I can only spend this much time and effort on this if it IS my living.” In which case, it makes sense to start charging.

Well, the reason I started this exchange of opinions, was essentially to find out how other people think of taking a hobby a step further.

To be honest, I think that putting so much time and effort in entertainment without asking for any financial support (at first) is admirable. Gary Larson stopped working on “The Far Side”, after his work was used so widely on the internet without him getting any credit (or financial compensation) – see http://www.creators.com/a-note-from-gary-larson.html for his appeal.

WYOTK endorses products without any compensation from the sellers of these products, so to conclude: I would rather see large logos and product links on this site from for instance Duracell, keeping the creators inspired and out of costs, than to let the future hang in the balance of DVD sales.

Morefood – If you don’t see all the videos, all the wallpapers, shirts, and other things they have done in the past as work for money…well, it appears you are stuck in the 50′s before anything with “computers” (i know it’s wierd word that ‘computer’) was around. They’re not begging either, they put up a choice we as readers can choose to do, either we support their efforts or we don’t, if we don’t they won’t stay around, if we do they will. It’s not blackmail, it’s not begging, it’s a simple choice in life, they have mouths to feed and people to support, we pitch in or they will be forced to support those most important and move on to something that will.

WYOTK, on the other hand, has given me useful information, balanced opinions, and hours of hilarious entertainment for me and my family. I don’t consider them getting something for nothing if I donate. Besides – when the hobbies or art that someone loves turn out to be useful enough to society that the individual can make a living off it, we get some of the highest caliber of work you can find: motivated people who love what they do, because what they do is meaningful to them and to others. I prefer to think of THAT as the American way.

Although I am willing to support the effort of the DVD, is it not so that if one chooses a hobby and wants fame, one should not beg for money? Or is this what is nowadays meant by the American Way?

I spend a lot of time and money on hobbies (although the library is free, it is sometimes nicer to actually own the book), I never ask anyone to give me money to buy books, or else I will stop reading entirely.

Creating (any form of) art can cost money and should be sponsored, but not by means of begging.

(pardon my critique, but does one not work for money anymore?)

The happy thing about buying the dvd is that is supports the show. Obviously we put those episodes there to encourage people to buy discs. We realize that some people will “share” and have made no safeguards on the dvd to prevent it. Perhaps we’re misguided, but we think (hope) the general public will support things they think are worth while. See our vote with your feet episode.

Besides, we can’t afford the lawyers to stop them. (equals D)

So thousands of penniless college students will also adore you.
