Spelling Matters

Death of the DVD November 29th, 2010 Hugs and Kisses XOXOXO

Is spelling irrelevant? Is letter placement overrated? We got an email that says it is.

Uh Oh! No video. You will need the Flash player and Javascript enabled to watch this show.

Hey. Have you seen this one in your email box? Read along with me.

Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn’t mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be at the rghit pclae. The rset can be a toatl mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe.

That’s a fun one isn’t it. It’s magic, like crazy dyslexic David Copperfield magic. With an abracadabra, a wave of the wand and a pair of tight leather pants you’re reading something that doesn’t look like it should make any sence! But before you gloat about how unimportant spelling is and forward this little parlor trick to all of your friends, there’s a few things you ought to know.

I love it when things like this give a source. That’s always the first place you look. And with thirty seconds of intense internet searching, you’ll find that Cambridge is not affiliated with this paragraph. In fact, Matt Davis, who works at Cambridge’s Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit has sectioned off a little corner of the university’s site where he examines this little anomaly in depth. But we won’t go into too much of what Matt says to disprobe it. We want to spoil it for you in our own special way instead.

First, let’s take the paragraph apart and see if we can learn its secrets. There are a total of 69 words in the paragraph. If we follow the rule that the first and last letters have to be the same, that would mean any word with 3 letters or less is not altered. That’s 32 words. So almost half of this paragraph is already spelled correctly.

Oh no. It’s loosing it’s Chris Angel, eye makeup, flames jumping up out of the stage magic for me. I can see the wires.

The 4 letter words are interesting too because there are only two letters that can be swapped. Not a lot of brain power required to figuer that one out.

Stop! You’re ruining it! Like a tiger biting Roy Horn’s head kind of magic. It was kind of a magical moment.

This leaves our little illusion with only 24 words that are 5 letters or more. And if you read the paragraph carefully, they are all words you expect to be there. The structure of the sentences are so simple and intuitive that your brain is already anticipating the correct word before it has to read it.

And some of them are going easy on you, because Cambridge has only two pairs of letters inverted instead of all 8 jumbled up. Cgibramde is much more difficult to identify as Cambridge.

Try reading this one. [Atelliave uencreiantits torhugh a hlahety dsoe of sestickpim.] It’s not easy when you take out those short words is it? Here let me help. Alleviate uncertainties through a healthy dose of skepticism. And we even gave you two words. I think you see my point.

Let this be a lesson to all of us. Don’t let sharletons and tricksters pull the wool over your eyes. You can’t believe everything you read, whether it’s spelled correctly or not.

[Waht You Oghut To Konw.com] This one’s a gimme.

Now forward this video to all your closest friends or you’ll have bad luck for a million years. No seriously, that’s for real.
