Basically you have basic units like the meter (m), the second (s), and the kilogram (kg). You probably know what these all mean, and they all combine to make other, more complex units to measure different quantities, like the meter per second, used to measure velocity. A velocity of one meter per second means that something moves one meter in one second. An acceleration of one meter per second per second (meter per second squared) means that you gain one meter per second in velocity every second. The kilogram-meter per second squared, or newton, measures force, and it is a force that, if applied constantly, will accelerate a one-kilogram object at one m/s^2. Momentum means matter (mass) with motion, and is measured in kg-m/s. Impulse, which is a certain force applied over a certain amount of time, is measured in newton-seconds. Energy is defined as the capacity to do work, which is a force applied over a certain distance. It is measured in newton-meters, or joules. Potential energy is energy that an object has due to its position relative to earth or a magnet, something that pulls. Kinetic energy is energy that something has due to its motion. Power, as you have said, is work divided by time, a force moving an object a certain distance, in a certain amount of time. It is measured in joules per second, or watts.

There is also some notations that are our tools for simplifying things, and among those are things like v’ and KE’, read velocity prime and kinetic energy prime. v with zero as a subscript (v?), read v naught. m is mass (only in equations) a is acceleration, F is force, d is distance, delta, (the triangle) means the change in whatever, and g is the acceleration due to gravity, constant no matter the object, 9.80 m/s^2. These and more are used in equations.

There are equations for finding the units given include, but are not limited to,
F=ma
v=v naught+at(time)
PE(potential energy)=mgh(height)
KE=1/2mv^2
W(work)=delta KE

You may have known all of this and more already, but just in case, here is the general idea of the wonderful world of physics to teach to us commoners.

Future show idea: How about a show on eastern medicine, and how it differs from western medicine. It seems that there is a lot of placebo around eastern, but if patients get results, does it really matter whether it is placebo or not? And why do western medics always insist on an xray when they say that they are pretty sure it isn’t broken? What’s up with that? What do you think?

I just viewed a episode on evolution vs religion. I thought it was kind of strange to say there was no solid proof of evolution. I was under the understanding that evolution itself was proven, just perhaps not so far as the all encompassing umbrella most view it under.

With the emergence of super bugs and the existence of bio weaponry defense research labs. I believe evolution is proven beyond a doubt to be at least on a microbial level scientifically sound. One of the methods i have heard they use is administering conditions that are on the threshold of survivability to microbes and repeatedly harvesting the survivors to generate resistant strains of various things. This itself would be interesting to do a show on but its not what i was thinking about.

My suggestion is cancer. I have watched 20 of your videos so far and i have yet to find one that i disagree with. So being lazy I’d love to see you do a show on looking at cancer as a window to view evolution through. Cancer as i understand it is a cell that no longer functions in its original capacity. This cell malfunction can be caused by any combination of millions of separate influences, from human made chemicals to the sun, to even direct impact (Impact tumors who knew (O.o) ). The path I want looked into is harmless cancer as evolution. If a cell can be damaged it is safe to say it has been changed by a outside influence. Now lets say a cell is damaged in such a way that it fulfills its original task better than it was intended. If this occurs often enough its possible it would happen once in a wile out of the 6 billion of us to our reproductive systems thus passing a random trait forward.

We know if every human were to live forever they would eventually get cancer. We know babies are born with defects. We know many drugs cause cancer. We know not to drink or smoke wile pregnant. I Hope your following my logic leaps. But regardless of if you are or are not I’m sure if you speak on any portion of this it will be interesting and informative. :D!!!

Oh also on evolution human made dog breeds and cow breeds. Selective breeding. It has been said we should as a race stop playing god. I’m still holding out for a pet dragon that craps gum drops.

Sorry – I’m to busy or lazy or both to do any research (but not to watch your shows – yea you!) Except for this – I have a close relative who works at an Oakley Vault and an Under Armour Locker Store at an outlet mall and he told me that they are really just corporate stores and don’t offer any real discounts. Is it Just me or does it seem like the whole “Outlet Mall” is becoming just a corporate ploy to get people to buy something at “outlet prices”? What they ought to know: NO, IT’S NOT!!! Opera, according to Webster is: ” a drama set to music and made up of vocal pieces with orchestral accompaniment and orchestral overtures and interludes.” Phantom contains dialogue. Thus, it is a musical, not an opera.

Rumor #2: The Phantom is a real ghost.
WTOTK: Nope! He’s a human being, but as he was one of the architects of the Opera Populaire,(or the Palais Garnier, as it’s called in the book)he had the means to create secret passages, hollow columns, and his own underground home to make him seem like a ghost.(“Angel of the Opera” by Sam Siciliano)
Which brings me to my next rumor:

#3: Phantom has no factual basis.
WTOTK: Strangely enough, it does. The real-life Paris Opera does indeed have an underground lake. Jean-Louis Charles Garnier, the main architect, specifically wanted it there. so, when the workers struck water, he had them pump it all out, add some supports for the building, and them pump the water back in! Next, while the chandelier itself never fell, one of its counterweights did. It even made the newspaper! “200 kilos on the head of a concierge!” (introduction to Gaston LeRoux’s “The Phantom of the Opera”)

When you bring in the sequel, Love Never Dies, there’s even more! A wealthy foreigner setting up a park on Coney Island, a wealthy noble gambling off his entire fortune… The list goes on and on. When you add the superstitions of young chorus girls, there’s more than enough of a base.

I was introduced to your videos on uTube just today by a friend living in Utah. Consequently, I just added another item to my bucket list – watch all of the WYOTK shows…..all 292 of them. I enjoyed the material and presentation. You guys are very talented and entertaining but I am certain that your parents have already told you that many times. I must say, you sure do talk fast; in Texas, our ears aren’t trained to listen at that speed!

My suggestion is a parody on obvious (aka for idiotic) warning messages on labels and their origins. Some warnings are required by law, others are mandated by corporate legal departments as a CYA strategy.

For example:

1) Coffee Cup – Caution: The liquid contents of this cup may be hot. This is an obvious example which originated as a result from a well publicized law suit against McDonalds.

2) Cigarettes – Caution: The surgeon general has determined that cigarette smoking may be hazardous to your health.

3) Clothes Iron – Caution: Do not touch iron surface. Touching the iron surface may cause severe burns or injury. Obviously, someone touched the iron, got burned and contacted customer service (or an attorney).

4) Plastic Bags – Caution: This is not a toy!

5) Drain Cleaner – Caution: Consuming this product may cause severe injury or even death. I believe the “may” should be changed to “will” to give the message more punch.

6) Electronic Appliances – Caution: Disconnect the power source before commencing repairs on this product.

I will bet you lunch that you can pick up any consumer item and find an obvious warning that is laughable.

Let me know what you think of this idea. If it’s a go, then I am willing to help with the research.

Halloween, where did it come from, why, what started it?

Since you already did a show on duct / duck tape, how about one on WD40 oil?

- One old man claims it’s nothing more than kerosene with some vanilla added so it smells good. (How to verify any part of that?)

- It does penetrate rust on tools, so you can salvage that old pair of pliers and get the hinge to open up again so you can use them.

- It helps get sticky price tags off…

… and probably most other things that a petroleum distillate will do, like:

- get spray paint off your skin, or

- remove ball-point-pen ink from your shirt (and it does smell better than hair spray for this purpose).

(I haven’t tried all these so I can’t confirm them.)

There are probably hundreds of tips and uses for WD 40; mentioning a few of the more useful or unusual ones on the show might be interesting to viewers. If there’s enough interest, you could a follow-up show later with more tips and uses. Or ask your viewers to post their favorite uses for WD 40.

P.S You just lost the game

I was wondering if you could do a show on actual recycling, though I did enjoy the dumpster dive bit. (college dormitory dumpsters at the end of semester are treasure troves of stuff with no more than one year of use if you ever need anything new to you for free) I only shop second hand or curbside unless necessary.

What should people who either can’t read or are so right wing they are indignant and throw away a plastic bottle, an aluminum can, or a newspaper, when immediately next to the trash bin that they just used there is a recycling bin (in malls or on college campuses for example) know about recycling?

For starters the majority of cons against recycling, that I have heard from such indignant aforementioned people anyways, also apply to trash disposal,(thus making them void in theory) such as landfills, to incineration, to raw resources, to transportation of materials, to processing and subsequent pollution, to cost & benefits, and more importantly in the political realm the cost to consumers. Secondly if more people recycled, wouldn’t most of the costs arguments be null and void, because it would therefore be a profitable industry, so those arguments also are voided. More importantly if recycling was done on larger scale, it would create more jobs to sort, clean, and process all the non magnetic garbage (think Toy Story 3) and also increase the efficiency and reduce the impact from both recycling and obtaining new materials, and their individual methods of disposal. What do we want to do with all the refuse that can be recycled? (compost is a different discussion, but awesome!)

More importantly, I think people should be using the free recycling (as stated above) where available. Inform people to know if they have free curbside pick up (as I do), or a local drop off (see Orlando Florida area, every grocery store, public library, most churches, and all parks all have them free with individual bins), or even paid recycling centers, where you get paid by weight to get rid of your recyclables (which i grew up with less than three blocks away) all while reducing trash. Maybe I am biased since we were only allowed three bags OR that single household of trash bin “free” each week or we had to pay more. Which sounds like it would be enough but there were eleven kids in my family so we made a lot more refuse than the typical family, BUT we recycled it so it was never actually a problem.

Anyhow, I was wondering if you could do a show on the meaning of life. I know it would be very controversial, but I think it would make a very good video if done right. And you guys have the stuff to do it right.

You see, I was having a argument with my friend the other day, who is entirely convinced that the only purpose of the human race is to continue through reproduction. Though I see the merit to his argument I don’t think he is looking at the issue deeply enough, and that he is only thinking about the biological meaning of life. I believe that there is a greater purpose to the human race, if only to observe the world around us. My main point is that we wouldn’t have eyes if the was no light to see, so why can we think about the meaning of life is there is no reason behind it.

I am still in high school, and I have a brilliant teacher in VCE Classical Studies (Which is basically year 12 Greek History). He says that the meaning of life to humans currently is to search for the meaning of life. He believes that humans will never really find a meanin to life with which they will be satisfied, and so thinks that each person seeks to find their own, often turning to religion to find it.

In Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, it is suggested that the answer to life, the universe and everything is 42. The question to the answer, however, is unknown. So perhaps humans already know the answer, but not the question.

I also heard that in Japan there is a team of scientists trying to find the meaning of life by finding the weight of the soul, measuring people’s bodies a second before and after they die to find any weight difference.

Please pick this! I have faith that you can do it right; so many people have tried and failed.

Right on… you guys are doing a great job, like I said in my comments: this country needs the kind of sensible angle you present on topics that really aren’t all that complex, but due to the bipolar nature of a multi party political system, blows an issue sky high into what I call “calypso nutso!”

Have you done anything re: what you should really know about the end of the world? There are huge misconceptions out there on exactly what endangers us from a natural disaster. For obvious reasons, most will cite an asteroid or comet impact, when in reality a solar flare at the heighth of a vesuvian year (2013 in this case) can actually wipe out a huge swath of our electrical grid system and with in a month millions would start to die due to the lack of electricity… so in weird way, that danger is ony significant because of our increased dependency on electricity and computing devices.

Another overlooked danger by media? Pinwheel star cluster WR-401 can go supernova on us at any time (it’s 8,000 light years away and scientists are suggesting it may have already collapsed and exploded). When a giant star collapses into a supernova, it’s outer shell is released first then it implodes, spinning faster and faster much like a ice skater does when they draw in their arms. So there it is, a fast spinning collapsing giant star, and wham– when it goes supernova, the released energy initially follows the path of the poles sending out material in “Gamma Ray” bursts that– even with 8,000 light years distance– could fry our atmosphere and plunge us into an ice age.

Last bit about the Gamma Ray Burster threat and pinwheel star systems: we know the gamma ray bursts exit at the poles do to the high spin rate, so in a dual star system a pinwheel of gas peels off in as a “pinwheel” shape because we are staring right down their axis– so in a very scary way: we may be looking down the barrel of a cosmic shotgun.

What it really boils down to is this: as Steven Hawking puts it, we are more likely to die from something human-caused than mother nature. Well, thats sort of half-correct. A solar flare is natural and it is possible for one big flare to damage our atmosphere, but the real danger is the fact that we have an antiquated electrical grid than barely handle summer time power needs– a solar flare will fry it and as it did in Canada in 1985, take out power for millions for months at a time. Satellites will be damaged and computers are going to get zapped as well. About the only positive thing an earthling will get from this is a fantasic aurora filling the night sky.

Not sure how much you heard about it in the States, but there’s a lot of controversy surrounding it. There were no treaties signed for the indigenous land it’s on, a lot of money has been cut from other programs to fund the Olympics, and people who live in low-income housing in downtown Vancouver have been kicked out so they can redevelop the area and make it look all spiffy for the international community, not to mention that most of the homeless people have been displaced to other cities such as Victoria.

Apparently, a kid became addicted to Halo 3 after receiving an injury and allegedly murdered his mother over the game after she took it away.

Obviously this is tragic and I would like to hear your opinions or any facts you can find on how violent games or movies do or do not influence kids, and if they are enough to inspire people to commit crimes.

As far as a show idea goes, I’d love to see you do something on the orgins of smoking. I can understand how people today can start and become addicted to smoking, but where, how and why did this practice begin? Who and why did someone decide that they were going to harvest a random crop, light it on fire and then suck it down their throat? WHO WOULD JUST DO THAT?? AND, to my knowledge, most people HATE smoking the first time they try it. So not only did these people come up with that crazy idea, but for some reason, kept doing after likely coughing like crazy from the nasty taste the first time they did it! I can’t imagine that peer pressure was a factor then. It’s just always something I’ve wondered and a point of view that most people probably dont think about.

And lastly, You should put a notice on your website informing people who register for your site, that the confirmation Email is being diverted to the “SPAM folder”. If I had to guess why, I would say that it due to the computer generated passwords contained in that Email which contain multiple symbols in succession (i.e $^%#9y*%). I’m glad you are back and just in the nick of time. While you were gone I signed up for Facebook. All of my friends encouraged me and I gave in to the peer pressure. Now I find that I am an Fb addict! Little did I know of all the conditions that have been identified: Facebook Addiction Disorder (FAD), Compulsive Facebook Disorder (CFD) and Acute Facebook Disorder (AFD). Although none of these seem to have been accepted by the medcial community, I found out that Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD) is in fact a real medical problem. Internet addiction disorder (IAD) was first theorized by Dr. Ivan Goldberg in 1995. Defined as a maladaptive pattern of Internet use, IAD can lead to clinically significant impairment or distress.

I’m sure their is an abundance of great knowledge among the viewership from their careers, hobbies, and areas of interest.

This might break with your vision of WYOTK but could be a cool new approach at this time.

There’s a suggestion in here, so bear with me.

So, I was super bummed to hear that the show had died, and right away (Okay, like 2 weeks later) I started brainstorming ways to bring it back. I signed the WYOTK TV petition, doughnated, and advertised it with fliers in my town (All 10 houses and 1 grocery store of it)

Finally, I was listening to the radio, and I thought of something. Maybe you guys could go on NPR or something, since they are always looking for new talent, and you could be really good on the radio. It’s not like you couldn’t modify almost every show to make it radio friendly, you don’t even use props, and maybe Camera Guy could participate vocally, too.

It may be worth nothing, but it would take less time, money, etc, and you would get a LOT more followers.

Sorry this was such a long suggestion. I hope it’s worth something.

So does this mean that if I bought a new house after 2008 that I would be running to the circuit breaker all the time?

I knew that ultrasounds were based off sound like sonar, but I was curious about how a sound translates to a picture. So of course I googled it.

This website explains it pretty basically, but didn’t get into any nitty gritty at all, probably because it’s a medical website. So I found this next website:

The second page in this mini-tutorial gave me more of what I wanted, like the speed of sound in tissue (5,005 ft/sec, which I thought was cool). The next page explained how the sound waves are generated by vibrating crystals and that this principle was discovered back in 1890 by Pierre and Jacques Curie (hey, you could do a French accent. You know you want to.)

There’s also a newer kind of 3D ultrasound that utilizes mutliple probes to create a 3-dimensional picture of whatever you’re looking at, which allows for greater picture quality for first time parents looking at their baby, and better diagnostics for tumors and blood flow.

I thought it was kinda cool, and if you like, I have my first ultrasound you could use. It’s pretty fun, b/c baby does a little dance by waving its arms and legs around. Shameless use of the internet to promote my baby? Heck yes.

I know that there are trends for names (at least here in Portugal – lately, every baby is either called Beatriz or Afonso) and there are those who want to avoid the trend by giving a unique name to their baby (“Apple”??)
It seems that there is no middle ground.

Ok, the earth is overpopulated and you want something nice but original. In my country, there are laws regarding name registry and they can sometimes be picky. But in Brazil, you can name your baby anything!! (like “Deus É Infinitamente Misericordioso” – God Is Infinitely Merciful)…Damn!

I’m a teacher and I’ve had students with very weird names (poor kids!) but I’ve also had up to 5 students with the same name in one class.

Are there enough “normal” names for everybody? What are normal names anyway?

Many people think irregardless is not a word. Logically, it makes no sense because of the negative roots “ir-” and “-less.” Personally, I use the word as an alternative for the phrase “It doesn’t matter”– like Gretchen did in the movie “Mean Girls.” If you think about it, it makes sense now. It is neither regarding nor disregarding a matter.

Plus, it’s just a really funny word to use…

Over the last few weeks, I’ve been getting daily tension headaches. I’m sure its due to watching your show….just kidding. :oP

Anyhow, I know the advice for this is ‘go see your doctor’. Well, I don’t have a doctor, I don’t have insurance and well, I can’t see a doctor. I had this problem once before and the doc just recomended over the counter drugs. Specifically – Excedrin and Ibprofin. I’m so iffy about taking this stuff because of the long term effects it can have on the liver and stomach (I already have a sensitive stomach).

My question is this – do you know of any natural remedies that can help relieve tension headaches? And can you maybe list various things that could cause these things on a consistent level. I’ve searched the internet for this stuff, and i’ve tried some of these remedies but they don’t seem to work. I made a post in a couple of myspace group about tension headaches and found out many of the people in there suffered from them too, but their only advice was to pop a pill. :(

So – being that there’s tons of people who suffer from tension headaches daily – I think its a good bet that an episode about them would be useful to many of your viewers.

How about making a show regarding Internet-piracy? What are your opinions about this? This is especially relevant subject because The Pirate Bay, the largest torrent tracker is being sued, and could be shut down permanently.

If they are shut down, what will this mean for the Internet?
