The guy behind the camera caught strep throat. And he didn’t tell me about it so I didn’t know when I came in. And you can catch it from breathing.

He can’t use the tripod…it’s too busy as a prop for guns, guitars and anything else that doesn’t fit into the whatyououghttknow budget.

I have to say that Ingrid is totally right. I’m a prenursing major and so that means i am studying biology and disease just not in a nursing program yet. But there are actually some diseases that are caused by overzealous hygiene. Lice prefer clean places and so does the disease monaliasis plus it can change the Ph or the acidity of an area that usually protects itself from disease as the soaps and scrubbing can take away chemicals or add chemicals that make the Ph level rise to a tolerable place for germs.

Did the guy behind the camera get tested for strep? Many sore throats are viral infections and don’t require antibiotics. The doctor can’t tell if it is strep vs. viral without a strep screen or culture.
While I, as a mom, am of course a big proponent of hand-washing, I agree that you must take care of your skin and your immune system by not over doing it. If your immune system isn’t exposed to small doses of bacteria and other stuff(yep, that’s an official medical term…i’m sure of it!) it doesn’t build up the necessary anti-bodies to fend off the big attacks.
My mom who is in the medical field said that unless you are in one of the places where there are a lot of yucky bugs, you really shouldn’t use the anti-bacterial gel stuff….simple water and soap, but not like every 5 minutes, is best. Places where it would be appropriate would be hospitals(they are the worst for bad bugs!), airports, and schools.
For the record…my mom and i and our families rarely get sick. stay healthy!

Personally I don’t worry too much about diseases. My immune system is so great, I’m allergic to almost everything. (Note: it would be cool to have a show on allergies) I hardly ever get sick, except when my girlfriend has something. Of course I do wash my hands, but still…

Well of course you should wash your hands regularly, especially after going to the bathroom, before preparing dinner, or when you’ve done some nasty things.
BUT you shouldn’t do it to often, like every hour or so. Your skin is your first protection against diseases, if you wash it to often it could damage your top layer, making it more permeabel (is that word? easier getting through) for bacteria and other nasty stuff to get in. Of course you still have your lovable dendritic cells who will probably take care of them, but still.
Also your skin is full of bacteria, but mostly they are full of harmless bacteria that won’t make you sick. If you wash yourself to often and to aggressively with strong soap, you wash out all the good bacteria, making room on your skin for the bad ones, which can also go through the skin easier and it could take a while before the bad ones are taken care of and the good ones are back.
So yes, do wash your hands often, just not too often and don’t use to agressive soap and don’t worry, your body is good at taking care of the nasty ;)
Just my two cents ;)

I work in a resturant, I must wash my hands 50 times a day. The thought of having someones “yucky” on me is disheartening. Thank you for strenghting my resolve to be anal about handwashing.

Can we put THAT on some shirts? :)

Woo hoo! I’m the first one to post!!! A dream come true! :)
So I can’t think of anything cool or clever to say. Shoot. My moment of glory comes and I’m just all dried up. Wait…one quick thing. Haven’t you guys done a ton of ’sicky’ shows? Like the Vitamin C one and the Infectious or Contagious People one? Interesting….:)

Since we are talking about disease and hand sanatizer, I’d like to see an exposé on those hand sanitizers that kill 99.9% of germs, however that also means killing the good germs that are on our hands. How come nobody talks about that? Anyway, that’s what I’d like to see.
